My bird of paradise is indoors near a big bright window. It grows new leaves, but the leaves split and the edges brown. I know splitting can be normal, but mine looks rougher than the photos I see online. Humidity is around 40 percent. I water when the top few inches are dry, usually every 10 to 14 days. The pot drains well. No pests that I can see. Is this just what bird of paradise looks like indoors, or can I make it cleaner?

Some splitting is normal. Those big leaves split in wind outdoors, and indoors they still tear from movement, brushing, and low humidity.

Brown edges can come from dry air, inconsistent watering, or salts. If you use tap water and fertilize, flush the pot occasionally.

Check if the leaf is touching a wall or window. Mine tore more when new leaves unfurled against the glass.

Online photos often show plants right after cleaning, pruning, and perfect lighting. A working indoor bird of paradise usually has a few battle scars.

Watch the newest leaf. If it opens mostly clean and then gets rough over time, environment and handling are likely. If it opens already damaged, look more closely at watering or pests.

Make sure you are watering deeply when you do water. A large root ball can be dry in the center even when the top few inches seem like the main signal.
