I repotted my ZZ plant two weeks ago because it was cracking the nursery pot. I moved it into a pot about two inches wider with a mix of potting soil, perlite, and bark. I did not water right away, then watered once after four days. Now one stalk is turning yellow from the bottom up. The rest of the plant looks firm and green. The yellow stalk is not mushy, but it is definitely not coming back. Did I overpot it? Should I pull the plant back out, or is one yellow stalk normal after repotting?

One stalk after a repot would not make me panic. ZZ plants store a lot in those rhizomes and they can drop older growth when disturbed.

Two inches wider can be okay if the root mass was big, but ZZ plants do not need roomy wet soil. If the pot stays heavy for a long time, that is the thing to watch.

I would remove the yellow stalk once it is fully yellow or if it gets soft. Do not keep watering to help it. Let the rest of the plant settle.

If the rhizomes were firm during the repot, leave it alone. Pulling it out again because one stalk yellowed may cause more stress than the original repot.

Make sure the decorative pot is not trapping water under the nursery pot. ZZ plants are very good at looking fine while the bottom half is staying too wet.

Mine yellowed one stalk after repotting and then did nothing for two months. It eventually pushed a new shoot. The waiting part was the hardest care task.
